Press Releases

In honor of Child Abuse Prevention Month in April, the Children’s Action Committee (CAC) of Mendocino County will hold its annual Outreach Day in Ukiah. The Ukiah Outreach Day will be held on Wednesday, April 2 starting at 10a.m., at The SPACE Theater on 508 W. Perkins Street. CAC will provide free lunch and t-shirts to volunteers.

Volunteers from the community will join together to visit local businesses to increase awareness about how child abuse impacts our community. The walkers will pass out colorful posters, blue ribbon pins, pinwheels and information about how to prevent child abuse—a serious social problem in Mendocino County that affects everyone.

The rate of child abuse in Mendocino County is 19.4 cases per 1,000 children– almost twice the rate of California child abuse as a whole. With thousands of child abuse reports made to Child Protective Services (CPS) each year, California’s reports of child maltreatment rank among the highest in the nation. Annually, the direct and indirect cost of child abuse and neglect in the United States exceeds $124 billion. Thus, communities are affected both socially and economically on a staggering scale.

In our county protecting children is a pressing issue. During a recent Maternal, Child and Adolescent Health (MCAH) stakeholders’ needs assessment meeting, Child Abuse and Neglect ranked as number 3 priority problems out of 16. Because child maltreatment impacts the community as a whole, effective child abuse prevention requires a collective effort from each member of the community. Everyone can make a difference in the life of a child. For more information, please visit www.mendocinokids.org or call 707-467-2010.

The Children’s Action Committee is a committee of the Policy Council on Children and Youth. Committee members include parents, leaders of local nonprofits, and much more. To find out more about how you can support happy and healthy kids, follow CAC on Facebook at www.facebook.com/CACMendocino.

Pinwheels for prevention

April is national Child Abuse Prevention Month and the Children’s Action Committee of Mendocino County encourages everyone to help spread the word about the importance of children’s wellbeing in our community. In 2008, pinwheels became the national symbol of child abuse prevention. The Children’s Action Committee (CAC), advocates for Mendocino County’s community to raise awareness and increase education.

(CAC) is a subcommittee of the countywide Policy Council on Children and Youth (PCCY) — a state-mandated collaborative group of agencies and community representatives working together to improve the quality of services provided to children, youth, and their families in Mendocino County. Although connected to a mandated collaborative (PCCY), CAC has grassroots representation that is strong, committed, and broad-based. So far we have the support of the Sheriff Department, Willits Police Department, Fire Departments and California Highway Patrol throughout Mendocino County for Child Abuse Prevention Month.

In honor of this special month, we are asking community members to join in child abuse prevention month, by planting a pinwheel garden. The Children’s Action Committee will provide pinwheels and blue ribbon pins so you may show your support for child abuse prevention. 224 substantiated cases of child abuse have been reported in Mendocino County since February of last year.  Plant a pinwheel for every case reported since February 2013. It is a reflection of hope, health, and safety. Many children in our own community face some type of child abuse and neglect every day. For more information about child abuse and neglect in our county please visit http://www.healthymendocino.org/.

In 2012 there were 19.4 cases of alleged abuses per 1,000 children in Mendocino County. The rate for child abuse in Mendocino County is almost twice as California child abuse rate as a whole. Please check out the following link for more information about the pinwheel campaign http://www.pinwheelsforprevention.org/index.php.

Blue Ribbon Magnet

April is national Child Abuse Prevention Month and the Children’s Action Committee (CAC) of Mendocino County is encouraging everyone to spread the word about the importance of children’s wellbeing in our community.

In honor of this special month, the Mendocino County Police Departments, Fire Departments and Sheriff’s Departments are participating in Child Abuse Prevention month by placing a Blue Ribbon, national symbol of child abuse prevention, on the Departments’ vehicles. We are providing law enforcement with Blue Ribbon magnets and pins so they may declare their support for child abuse prevention in Mendocino County.

The Children’s Action Committee advocates for a happy and healthy community through working to increase awareness and education. CAC is a subcommittee of the countywide Policy Council on Children and Youth (PCCY) — a state-mandated, collaborative group of agencies and community representatives working together to improve the quality of services provided to children, youth, and their families in Mendocino County.
